POOR CONDITION OF THE MARINE LAKE, NEW BRIGHTON

Swimming in filth - the unacceptable state of Marine Lake
This photo is from a frequent visitor to New Brighton who complains about the negative image it portrays. We have to agree that the state of litter is unacceptable.

Seabank Road Improvements

This vital corridor which is one of a number between Birkenhead and New Brighton and forms an integral part of the Wirral Waterfront's (SRB6) and New Wallasey (SRB3) Single Regeneration Budget delivery plans.

The Wirral Waterfront consulted with traders in this area so that plans could be brought forward at an early stage to progress matters. A couple of meetings were arranged and set up with all concerned and after individual contact by the SRB team plans were drawn up and agreed by the majority of traders.

A £400,000 plus scheme is ready to start in January. Additionally each individual trader has also been offered £2,500 towards shop front improvements, all this will greatly enhance the shopping area for both businesses and residents alike. This scheme while an individual project in its own right none the less forms a vital cog in the wheel of the current New Brighton redevelopment plans that will shortly be going out for further public consultation.

The proposed scheme will consist of:

  • New canopies for all the shop fronts
  • New street furniture
  • New parking bays
  • New upgrading of the pedestrian crossing

Although this project is not dependent on a 100% take up it is important for traders not to miss out on this opportunity for their own businesses and New Brighton's future.

New Brighton Redevelopment Plans

Over this last year, Neptune, who are the preferred developers for New Brighton have revealed ambitious new plans to revitalise the resort. These have been subject to a significant degree of consultation with local groups. The New Brighton Community Partnership have also over the summer months ran their own community based survey to gauge reaction to the proposals. This has demonstrated a broad measure of public support within New Brighton for the Neptune proposals. At present Neptune are reflecting on the comments that have been made and will shortly be carrying out a major consultation exercise, not just in New Brighton, but across the whole of Wirral.

It is anticipated that New Brighton Community Centre will be one of the venues for this and it is also hoped that the Centre can also host an exhibition of the plans for this purpose. It is anticipated that an outline planning application for the scheme will be submitted later this year as a major planning application involving departure from the Unitary Development Plan it will need, of course, to be referred to Government Office.

Skateboard Park back on track!

This original scheme, which saw numerous meetings held at New Brighton Community Centre, and which was drawn up in conjunction with Wirral Council's old Leisure Services Department, local children and their parents, unfortunately it was not viable at the time due to a lack of funding. The good news is that this project is now back on track as part of a package of funding bidding for the 'new' Fair Share National Lottery. This is a 'new' funding initiative which is primarily about transforming 'open spaces', and Wallasey has been earmarked for a large slice of the cake. It is envisaged that the location will be on the Tower Grounds, New Brighton and will also include upgrading the children's playground. A report is due to go shortly to Wirral Council's Cabinet Committee. Watch this space for developments!

Vale Park Victory!

Wirral's 1st Green Flag has been awarded to Vale Park. It's now officially recognised to be one of the UK's finest parks. "Credit must go not only to the Council, but also to the Friends of Vale Park for organising year round activities and especially to the dedication of Peter the gardener".

£8m for Seacombe Ferry Space Centre

MORE than 8m has been secured to build a Seacombe Ferry tourist attraction which could potentially entice 150,000 visitors to Wirral. The Project, the International Astronomy and Space Centre (IASC), will create up to 60 jobs during construction, and is predicted to become one of the top Tourist Attractions in Europe.

Pending the approval for the project by the Department of Cultural and Media Studies, work will begin its construction in January. The Government Office for the North West has already confirmed the funding which will create a Centre to house the National School's Observatory Project - a scheme incorporating Satellite link-ups. A total of 8.275m has been ear-marked for the project, including money from the North West Development Agency and Wirral Council. Mersey Ferries, Wirral Waterfront and Liverpool John Moores University will run the project, many of the exhibitions of which, will be linked to research carried out by Liverpool University.

Other attractions at the IASC will include a recreation of Isaac Newton's laboratory, an exhibition documenting humankind's Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), and a game where visitors must use only basic navigational equipment to steer a simulated ship safely into Liverpool.

As part of the plan, the Grade II-listed annexe at Seacombe Ferry terminal will be refurbished to restore it to it's original appearance, and improvements will be made to the Ferry Terminal itself to cope with the expected increase of visitors.
